Wet collodion workshop: Joaquin Paredes will give a workshop at the School of Art of Huesca on April 27, 28, 29 and 30.

This workshop will take place in four afternoons from 15:30 to 19:30. It is an immersion in the process in which all the necessary knowledge will be imparted in order to start in the wet collodion with enough security and ability so that the student can develop in an autonomous way after the course.

To attend the workshop no previous knowledge of laboratory or large format cameras is required.

Joaquín Paredes will give a cyanotype workshop in the studio. No previous knowledge of laboratory or photography is required. Cyanotype is a 19th century photographic process based on ferric salts that produces permanent images of intense blue. It was discovered by Sir John Herschel. Although there are many variables of this process, it basically consists of two chemicals: potassium ferricyanide and ferric ammonium citrate.

Accommodation will be in the apartments "Torre de la Yerba", 300m from the Plaza Mayor of Cáceres.

It is a 12h workshop and the schedule is Saturday from 10:00 - 14:00 h and from 16:00 - 20:00 h and Sunday from 10:00 - 14:00 h.

Gelatin-Bromide is a photographic process created in 1871 by Richard Leach Maddox and improved in 1873 by J. Johnson who introduced the washing of the emulsion and later by the work of Charles Harper Bennett who perfected heat maturation to increase sensitivity. By the late 1970s and early 1980s, dry gelatine plate had almost completely displaced wet collodion, thus solving most of the disadvantages of this process.

We'll deal with topics like:

  • History of the process
  • Preparation and characteristics of gelatino-bromide emulsions
  • Washing
  • Maturation
  • Developing the negatives
  • We will make some copies of the plates on baryta paper.

We have prepared a workshop on collodion negatives and albumen prints given by Joaquín Paredes from our studio in Cáceres.

The albumen printing process was invented in 1850 by Louis Désiré Blanquart-Evrard and was the most popular photographic process during the second half of the 19th century. It is a process that produces beautiful copies with a characteristic gloss that made them prevail over matte copies such as salted paper. In combination with collodion negatives, they led to the first great "democratization" of photography. Making it accessible to a much larger audience.

The workshop consists of two days: the entire Saturday (morning and afternoon from 10-14h and 16-20h) and Sunday morning (10-14h)
