We have prepared a workshop on collodion negatives and albumen prints for April 17, 18, and 19, 2026, taught by Joaquín Paredes at our studio in Cáceres.

Albumin copying was invented in 1850 by Louis Désiré Blanquart-Evrard and was the most popular photographic process during the 19th century. It is a process that produces beautiful prints with a characteristic glow that made them prevail over matte prints on salted paper. In combination with collodion negatives they gave rise to the first great "democratization" of photography. Making it accessible to a much larger public.

You can reserve your place on our website: Collodion and albumen negatives workshop

It is a workshop in which we will learn everything necessary to make wet plate collodion negatives and albumen prints:

The first day will be dedicated to obtating the negatives with which we will later make our albumen prints:

  • Cleaning and preparation of the glass
  • Collodion formulas
  • Developer formulas
  • Intensification process
  • Retouching the negatives (a small introduction)

The second and third day will be dedicated to the albumen printing process:

  • Preparation of the albumen
  • Preparation of the two-layered albumenized papers
  • Sensitizing
  • Exposure, contrast control...
  • Washing, toning and fixing of the prints
  • Mounting
  • Burnishing the prints

This is a three days workshop: morning and afternoon from 10-14h and 16-20h

To be able to attend to this workshop it is important to have some experience with wet plate collodion. It is a complicated workshop and having some skills with the process will help the student to get the most out of it.
