We have prepared a workshop on collodion negatives and Aristotypes on June 19, 20, and 21, taught byJoaquín Paredesatour studio in Cáceres.

Aristotypes, collodion-chloride papers or leptographic papers were first developed in 1866 by Jean Laurent and José Martínez Sánchez, who with the name "leptographic paper" introduced to the market the first papers in which the image was created with silver chlorides contained in a collodion emulsion spread on a layer of gelatin and barite. It is a process of extraordinary sharpness and quality. Laurent and Martínez Sancho did not have great success with their invention, and even stopped manufacturing it a few years later. It was not until 1870 when this process became popular due to the need to find a quality and simple copying process under the name of "aristotype".

You can reserve your place through our website: Collodion Negatives and Aristotypes Workshop

It is a workshop in which we will learn everything we need to make wet collodion negatives and our own aristotypes:

The first day will be dedicated to obtating the negatives with which we will later make our albumen prints:

  • Cleaning and preparation of the glass
  • Collodion formulas
  • Developer formulas
  • Intensification process

The second day will be dedicated to the aristotype process and to finishing the collodion negatives:

  • Preparation of collodium-chloride emulsion
  • Paper types and pre-emulsion preparation
  • Paper emulsioning
  • Exhibition
  • Washing, toning and fixing of the prints
  • Mounting

The workshop is two full days morning and afternoon from 10-14h and 16-20h.

To be able to attend to this workshop it is important to have some experience with wet plate collodion. It is a complicated workshop and having some skills with the process will help the student to get the most out of it.
